Etymology and history

The name of Amethyst comes from the Greek Amethystos. The Greek word "amethystos" may be translated as "not drunken", from Greek, not methustos, intoxicated. Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it. In Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of intoxication, and of wine, was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the goddess Artemis answered, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos's desire to remain chaste, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.

Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz; its chemical formula is SiO2.

Crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac, or mauve is called Amethyst, a stone traditionally worn to guard against drunkenness and to instill a sober and serious mind.

Amethyst is dichroic, showing a bluish or reddish purple tinge when viewed from different angles.

Usually faceted as a mixed or step cut, amethyst has a distinctive inclusions that look like tiger stripes, thumbprints, or feathers.

Occurrence

Amethyst is found in all alluvial deposits or in geodes. Some of the largest geodes containing Amethyst are in Brazil. Amethyst from Urals (Russia) has a reddish tinge. Other localities – Canada, Sri Lanka, India, Uruguay, Madagascar, Germany and United States.
