Formerly, and amber trail led through the Polish lands and it transported precious minerals from the Southern coast of the Baltic to the Mediterranean countries.
Amber owes its name to borrowing from the German language, where the word Bernstein (Brenender Stein) means “the burning stone” There is much truth to this name, because real amber burns, giving off a resinous scent.
This is not the only name under which it was known in the past. The Greeks called this stone an electron, which means shining and glossy. In contrast, the Romans knew amber under the name lyncurium, or lynx urine, because according to legend, the golden stone was formed from the fossilized urine of this predator. Arabs called amber anbar, because the balsamic smell of burnt amber was associated with the smell of real amber. The Slavonic name jantar was taken over by the Lithuanians, and the Phoenician name jainitar – sea resin. The latter has a lot to do with reality, because amber is a fossilized resin of conifers.
