10 tips how NOT to take care of silver jewelry
Part one…
Rain falls outside my window … still far from a snowstorm I would expect in December. Maybe that’s why Holidays in my memory have gone sour, even though they have just ended. Among the wonders that hid under my Christmas tree, I also found jewelry (my collection of jewels from different artists is gradually growing :)). I thought to myself that maybe a good soul had left a silver trinket in between the needles of a Christmas tree, and now you have a dilemma how to take care of it, so that it does not lose its brightness? For this reason I prepared for you – AN ANTI-GUIDEBOOK, which is 10 tips how NOT to care of silver jewelry.
ANTI-GUIDEBOOK OF JEWELRY CARE
Almost every subject has a few myths, often repeated methods that supposedly work. Also, in the world of jewelry care, there are some curiosities. I’m sure you came across a lot of guides on how to care of jewelry. On my website, there is a category on this subject as well: JEWELRY CARE. Today, I decided to share an anti list with you with you, which is to protect your jewelry from the wrong practices, and save you from the stress!
1. DO NOT TRUST TOOTHPASTE!
Not once did I meet with the opinion that silver, which was darkened, should be treated with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Basically the advice itself is good, but … does it take into account the variety of pastes currently available on the market? If you need to clean your grandmother’s ring or fine jewelry, then take advantage of this advice. On the other hand, when your jewel has a polished surface of metal, I advise you to be careful. Pastes with granules can scratch the smooth surface of silver.
2. SUPPOSEDLY IT IS A SPECIALIZED SILVER CLEANER LIQUID, BU …
…something went wrong. Silver stains appeared, and the stones lost color or have damaged surface. Have you ever had such a situation? Liquids available for sale are best suited for small, silver items that do not have stones. The cleaning agent solution can damage the structure of organic stones, such as pearls or amber, and dyed specimens will most likely lose color. If your jewelry is covered with an oxidizer (the face is darkened to a steel gray shade), contact with the cleanser may discolor.
AVOID PAPER TISSUES AND COARSE FABRICS!
Just as the optometrists alarm that glasses should not be cleaned with a regular cloth or paper towel, delicate jewelry is best wiped with a cloth intended for these purposes. I have a warning for you here. Some types of wipes are soaked with a substance (sometimes in the form of powder), which can easily scratch a large, smooth, polished surface (leaving a satin effect instead of the original flash). Instead, they will be perfect for grooming old jewelry that was left in a box and darkened. The most important is the regularity. Cyclically rubbed jewelry will keep its glow for longer, even if instead of a professional handkerchief, you will use a soft, best light in color, fabric.
BE AWARE OF HOT AIR CLIMATE!
Sound of the sea, birds singing and hot sunshine bathed in salt water. Brrrr … especially the last two factors, which jewelry does not like. Moisture in every form is its enemy, and full immersion…horrible!!! The sun itself may harm your jewels, dyed stones will fade, and some, such as amber, may begin to melt. Therefore, never leave jewelry in sunlit areas or where there is high humidity.
CHANEL No.5
Do you love the smell of perfume and cannot imagine leaving home without using it? Just remember about moderation… and that the perfume should be your first before last step in getting ready to go. The honorable dot over the “i” should be reserved for jewelry. This way its beauty will last longer, because the favorite perfume will no longer damage the surface of silver and will not affect the color of stones.
